What is Nasi Toel?

Poke Rice, or locally known as Nasi Toel, is the first Nasi Toel/ Poke Rice in Indonesia. And is simply a meal where the condiments are between two layers of rice. It got its name from the technique of it's consumption, by poking and mixing it to achieve an equal division of flavors throughout the whole meal. Nobody would want to take bite of just rice and chili.

There are various types of poke rice, it's layers are in the order as follows; Rice(top), condiments (middle), and Rice (bottom) again. The condiments are all separated into different sections, which encourages the need to 'poke' the rice.

After being flipped horizontally on a sheet of clean oil paper, a small teaspoon of fried onion is put on the center of the top layer. The shaped rice is then wrapped in order to prevent any oil leakage, to keep it moist and to keep the shape of the poke rice.

And finally, the wrapped product is inserted into the Poke Rice packaging, along with a spoon. Enjoy and don't forget to poke and mix it!
